Looking for work can be an exhausting and time consuming process, but there are a few things that you can do to significantly reduce the amount of time that it takes you to apply to the same amount of jobs.
The first technique is called batching. What this means is that when you bunch each set of activities together, to save time. For each job that you apply, you need to find opportunities, customize your resume, write cover letters, apply to the jobs, and follow up. Rather than doing each of these one at a time, you can batch each set of activities together.
For example, first find ten jobs that you want to apply to. Then customize the resume for all of them as needed, and then write all of the cover letters. Then send them all out. That way you don’t need to keep starting and stopping different activities. Instead, you can get in the groove of each one, and work much more productively.
The second technique involves creating systems, so that some of the tasks time consuming tasks that you return to over and over won’t take so long. Examples include creating one resume that covers everything you need for every position, so that when you apply for each job, you just need to delete the things that aren’t relevant. Another example is to create a basic cover letter template, that you only need to tweak for each application.
In my next post, I’m going to include customizable cover letter template that you can use. Subscribe to my feed to get an update as soon as it’s available.
